It's hard to resist perusing movie trailers on a regular basis. When is Hollywood going to dish up their next "can't miss' hit? Well one thing we noticed when the Mars Needs Moms trailer came out was, "wow, I definitely won't be seeing that." Turns out the whole movie market thought the same thing: Mars Needs Moms tanks at the box office.
Box office takes are driven heavily by the young male audience. You win 15-30 men, your movie will succeed. Miss that audience and you better have a great secondary plan.
Yahoo! reports:
"Mars" faced several obstacles, according to box office observers. For one, moviegoers don't seem to like the motion-capture technology. Other times, it can work, such as in "Avatar."
"The movie ["Mars"] looked downright creepy," one observer notes.
The title also was problematic, specifically, the use of the word "mom," which might have been a turn-off for boys.
"The title shouldn't have been "Mars Needs Moms," but "Boys Need Not Come," one studio exec joked.
It is likely it will settle out as one of Disney's biggest flops. You'd think that with all of the money, experience, and marketing prowess that they couldn't miss.
