There has been a lot of hype recently about social media marketing, specifically in regards to Facebook. Companies and personalities all over are jumping on the band wagon and creating their Facebook page. In fact, its rare anymore that I go a day without seeing the Facebook logo with some company asking me to be their friend or fan.
We wanted to see if Facebook lived up to its hype, and I'm happy to announce that it does.
One of our websites is The Lens Flare, a photography community and shared photo gallery. To help promote this site, we created a Facebook page where we post announcements about the community as well as photo and camera tips.
Once the page was created, we invited our members to become fans, which about 100 did. This gave the page a good starting point. After that, we used Facebook's ad system to attract people who have indicated that they like photography, cameras, and other similar keywords. This allowed us to quickly increase our "likes" from 100 to 2600 for a relatively low price. Then we posted a helpful tip every day for a month.
What we found was that about half of the people that liked the Facebook page also visited the website during the month. Those that visited were a lot more engaged on the site and viewed more than twice the amount of pages than the average. In addition, the percentage of Facebook visitors that then became members of The Lens Flare was significantly higher than the average for the site, and the ad revenue generated was in line with other sources.
Fair warning though: there is a learning curve involved to get the most out of your Facebook page.
